2^nd August 2024, Dubai, UAE: The programme for the 9th annual The Maritime Standard Tanker Conference, which will be held on Thursday November 7th at the prestigious Atlantis, the Palm, Dubai, is taking shape. The theme of this year’s conference is Sustainable tanker shipping: accelerating the journey to net zero, which is highly topical and relevant for this sector of the shipping industry.

Session 2 of the conference which will look at Driving greater operational efficiency in tanker shipping, is sure to be one of the main draws on the day. This session will focus on the key issues facing tanker shipowners and operators in terms of day-to-day operations, and the solutions available to them. This will look at how best to accommodate environmental regulatory changes, but also how to embrace technological advances in areas such as digitalisation and AI to best effect, and the importance of innovation within the leadership of shipping organisations.

An important topic for discussion will be how best to respond to changing trade patterns in an era of geopolitical uncertainty. What does longer typical East-West voyages mean for the sector and how can the adverse effects be mitigated?

The environmental context will be much to the fore as well, for example looking at making the most of dual fuel capabilities, and optimising vessel performance with energy saving technologies, including wind power and carbon capture. Also included in this session will be the use of digital tools and AI   to strengthen commercial and operational resilience and the human element, assessing the development of training and other strategies that enhance crew capabilities. Safety at sea, combatting cyber security and other challenges facing the industry, will also be on the agenda.
